The Cape Independence Advocacy Group (CIAG) has formally notified the South African government of its intention to send a delegation to the United States to lobby for Western Cape secession. In a statement issued today, the organisation confirmed that it had written to President Cyril Ramaphosa, Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor, and Western Cape Premier Alan Winde regarding its plans.
According to the CIAG, the delegation is set to depart in early April and expects a favorable reception from US officials and other politically connected individuals. The group believes that Cape Independence aligns with the foreign policy objectives of the current US administration and claims that the issue is already gaining traction in Washington.
The CIAG outlined its objectives for the US visit, which include securing diplomatic support and fundraising for its campaign to compel the Western Cape Premier to hold a referendum on Cape Independence. The organisation has also indicated that, should the Premier continue to refuse to consult the people of the Western Cape, it is prepared to hold a private referendum as part of its contingency plans.
Citing legal advice, the CIAG insists that its activities are constitutionally protected and contribute to strengthening rather than undermining constitutional democracy in South Africa. It maintains that its pursuit of Cape Independence is being conducted in a legal, peaceful, and democratic manner.
To preempt any legal disputes, the CIAG has extended an invitation to the President, the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, and the Premier of the Western Cape to submit any objections they may have within the next seven days.
