Gauteng police have arrested four suspects, including two officers, for allegedly hijacking and robbing motorists while impersonating law enforcement officials.
The arrests come amid a rise in “blue light robberies,” where criminals use police-issued blue lights to stop and target unsuspecting motorists. The suspects are believed to have been operating on Gauteng roads for the past three years, terrorizing drivers through kidnappings, hijackings, and armed robberies.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, investigations led officers to the arrested SAPS members after they were caught on a truck’s surveillance camera during a hijacking (You can watch the video here). Following their detention, police tracked down two more civilian suspects, who were found in possession of three firearms and signal-jamming devices.
The arrests are linked to multiple hijackings and carjackings in Kempton Park. Nevhuhulwi confirmed that police are actively investigating further leads, as evidence suggests more law enforcement officers may be involved in these crimes.
This development follows another incident earlier in the week when two other suspects were arrested while attempting to hijack victims driving a Land Rover.
Gauteng provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni condemned the involvement of police officers in criminal activities, emphasizing that law enforcement will not tolerate corruption within its ranks.
“It is disheartening to see those who are supposed to uphold the law collaborating with criminals to terrorize our communities. This arrest should serve as a warning to the few rotten potatoes in our service that the arm of the law is long—we will catch up with them,” said Mthombeni.
Motorists are urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity on the roads as investigations continue.
