A Durban forex trader has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of two women, a crime that shocked the community and left families seeking justice.
The Durban High Court sentenced 31-year-old Lungani Mthethwa on March 17, 2025, after he pleaded guilty to the murders of Zizipho Gabisa and Anele Mbokazi. The two women were shot and killed on August 25, 2024, in Kenville, Sea Cow Lake, Durban.
According to court records, Mthethwa and his co-accused, Sandile Chili, had spent the day socializing with the victims before the situation turned deadly. The motive behind the killings remains unclear, but prosecutors described the incident as a brutal and senseless act of violence.
The case faced several delays, including postponed bail hearings in September 2024, before Mthethwa finally admitted to the killings in a plea deal. While the court considered his guilty plea a sign of remorse, family members of the victims were left angered by what they viewed as a lenient sentence.
Emotional scenes unfolded in the courtroom as the sentence was handed down, with relatives expressing grief and frustration. Some family members stated they had hoped for a harsher punishment, calling for justice that truly reflected the severity of the crime.
Meanwhile, authorities confirmed that investigations into Chili’s involvement are ongoing, with further legal proceedings expected.
